Principals Welcome

Welcome to Moonah Primary School. I am fortunate to be the principal of a school that values diversity, tradition and learning. Our school opened in 1911 with 66 students and now has 285 students. Our diversity is a significant feature of our school, we currently have fourteen different ethnic groups enrolled. In 2017 our whole school community developed our values:  respect, kindness, safety and learning.

Classroom teachers with support from senior staff run a whole school social skills program designed to equip students with social and emotional learning skills based on our school values. The interactive activities provide students with practical strategies and life skills to handle challenge and adversity.

The kitchen garden program has been in place since 2009 and is widely considered as the ‘gold standard’ of school kitchen garden programs. We are a demonstration school for the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Program and a lead school for the 24 Carrot Garden Project. All students in years 3-6 have a 90 minute kitchen lesson and a forty minute garden lesson each fortnight.

Our school offers an extensive Launching into Learning Program for young children (birth to Kindergarten) and their families. It is here we focus on developing positive relationships, support networks, life skills, caring communities and engagement with school.

We value parent involvement in all learning programs and offer a variety of avenues to work collaboratively with parents and carers. This includes celebrating learning, parents assisting in classes and across the school and supporting whole school initiatives and functions. We have an active School Association and Parent Action Group.

Student learning is at the centre of what we do; parents are our partners; and excellence is achieved through the caring, dedication and diligence of our staff. I believe that supporting the professional growth of teachers and working alongside our staff and families as we support our students in their learning and wellbeing are critical components of my role.  I welcome members of the community to make an appointment with me if they would like to know more about our wonderful school.
